Rotating at less than a mile an hour, a full rotation or “flight” takes thirty minutes. A breathtaking feat of design and engineering, passengers in the London Eye capsules can see up to 25 miles (40 kilometres) in all directions. It permits view’s of London from an entirely new perspective, and passengers can see parts of the city that are generally not visible from the ground.

Since its opening in the year 2000, the British Airways London Eye has become the most popular paid-for UK attraction, drawing over 3.5 million people a year (an average of 10,000 a day). It took the skills of hundreds of people from five countries and seven years to make the London Eye a reality. However there’s much, much more to the Eye than its amazing views and engineering. It has become an iconic symbol of London.

Run the City to Surf

Starting from humble beginnings back in 1971 the annual City to Surf fun run in Sydney has grown to become the must-do road running race in Australia, and the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere attracting over 50,000 participants each year.

The 14 kilometre (8.7 miles) run starts in the centre of Sydney near Hyde Park and finishes at Australia’s most famous beach, Bondi beach.

The race is open to all ages and levels of fitness. While some take the race very seriously, many participants make it a fun day out dressing up in themed costumes, stopping off at the many watering holes (pubs) along the way while enjoying the numerous amateur bands performing along the road as they run, walk or stroll to the finish line at Bondi Beach.

Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk

The walk along the coast from Bondi beach to Coogee beach is one of the beast coastal walks in Sydney which combines superb coastal views, swimming opportunities and fantastic restaurants and cafes.

Starting from the southern end of the Bondi Beach promenade the track takes you past the swimming baths which are home to the infamous Bondi Icebergs, whose members swim every day of the year regardless of how cold the weather. The path continues out to the headland of Mackenzies Point which offers fantastic views both north and south as well as an Aboriginal rock carving site.

The path then winds down to Tamarama and Bronte beach where its possible to relax in a café or have a swim in the surf or ocean pools. Continuing on, the path leads through the Waverley Cemetery, superbly located on cliff tops and offers some amazing oceans views. The Cemetery is the resting place of numerous famous Australians such as Henry Lawson, Victor Trumper, Lawrence Hargrave, Henry Kendall.

Walk on past Clovelly beach and Gordon’s Bay before reaching Coogee, a small beach enclosed by green headlands and backed with rows of cafes, restaurants and boutiques.

The walk is well marked with signs and should take and easy two and half hours for what is one of the best coastal walks in Sydney.

Swim at Bondi Beach

Bondi Beach is Australia’s most famous beach, and among the most well-known beaches in the world. So having a swim at Bondi is a must experience.

Bondi Beach is located only 7 kilometres east of Sydney’s central business district and is popular with both tourists and locals alike for swimming, surfing and sunbathing. Bondi Beach is well know for its vast sandy beach as well as its surf. “Bondi” is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘noise of water breaking’, and on a day when the surfs up its easy to see why.

Bondi Beach is patrolled 365 days a year by the Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club which is officially recognised as the worlds first surf lifesaving club.

You can learn to surf at Bondi. There are a couple of operators that provide surfing lessons to help you catch that wave for the ride of your life at one of the worlds most famous beaches. Or if you already know how to surf, but don’t have your board, you can hire a surf board or body board from shops around the beach.

The beach is backed by grassland where you can have a picnic, relax or play games. A promenade backing the beach is also a popular place for rollerblading, cycling or taking a walk. Campbell Parade, the ocean road up from the beach features many shops, popular cafes, bars, restaurants and hotels with great views of the beach and has a lively and busy atmosphere any time of the day or night.
